Leeds Chargers U7 (IP Program) – Frequently Asked Questions

Welcome to the Leeds Chargers U7 (Initiation Program) FAQ page! Whether you're new to hockey or returning for another season, this guide is here to answer your most common questions about our U7 program.

Who can play U7 hockey?

Any child who is turning 4 years old by December 31st of the current calendar year is eligible to play U7. The program is intended for players aged 4 to 6 years.

When does the U7 season run?

The season typically runs from the beginning of October to mid or late March, depending on ice availability and scheduling.

How often are practices?

Players participate in two practices per week. Practices have traditionally been held on Saturday and Sunday mornings from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM, although final times may vary each season based on ice scheduling with the local rinks and the ice convenor.

Why is the U7 price lower in Athens and Westport?

Thanks to the **generous support of our community partners—The Town of Athens and The Village of Westport—**we are able to offer the U7 program in both communities at a reduced registration cost. Their financial and logistical support helps offset ice and operational expenses, making hockey more accessible and affordable for families in our area. We deeply value their continued investment in growing the game at the grassroots level.

Where are practices held?

U7 is the only program in Leeds Minor Hockey that operates separately out of each local arena:

  • WTC Communications Centre (Westport)
  • Centre 76 (Athens)

Your child will be placed in one of these locations and remain there for the duration of the season. We try to assign players based on home address; however, final placement depends on enrollment numbers, coaching availability, and other logistical considerations.

Can U7 players play games?

U7 players are not eligible to participate in games until mid to late December, following Hockey Canada guidelines. The first half of the season is focused on skating, puck control, teamwork, and other essential skills through structured practices.

What equipment does my child need?

All U7 players must wear complete hockey equipment, including:

  • CSA-approved helmet with full face cage
  • Neck guard
  • Shoulder pads
  • Elbow pads
  • Hockey gloves
  • Hockey pants
  • Shin guards
  • Jock or Jill
  • Hockey skates
  • Stick

Jerseys and socks are generously provided by our community partner: Tim Hortons.

What do I need to do before my child can go on the ice?

Before participating, at least one parent or guardian must complete the “Respect in Sport – Parent Program.” This is a mandatory requirement under Hockey Canada policy.

Can parents help on the ice or with the team?

Yes—but with conditions:

  • On-ice volunteers must have a valid Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) and must complete all required coaching certifications through Hockey Canada.
  • Parents who wish to help off the ice (e.g., team manager) are encouraged to step up and support the team in a non-skating capacity.

What does the team manager do?

The team manager plays a key role in the success of each U7 team. Their responsibilities include:

  • Scheduling games and events
  • Entering the team into tournaments
  • Supporting communication between coaches and parents

Parent and coach input is always welcome, but a team manager is essential to keep things running smoothly.

Will my child get to play games or attend tournaments?

Yes. After December, teams may participate in games, jamborees, or local tournaments. These events offer players a chance to showcase their skills and enjoy a fun, competitive environment. Attendance is optional but encouraged.

How will I be kept informed about schedules and updates?

You will receive communication via email and/or a team communication platform such as TeamSnap. Please ensure your contact information is current at registration.
